Dr. Brian A. Burt is Research Scientist in the Wei LAB and Assistant Professor of Higher Education in the Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Through his research he seeks to provide new understandings of the complexity of science participation with the aim of better understanding the experiences that promote or turn students away from science pathways. He has published in leading educational journals such as the American Educational Research Journal, School Science and Mathematics, and Journal of Negro Education, to name a select few. He has won several academic honors including the National Science Foundation’s Early CAREER Award, and the National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship. He was also named a 2019 Emerging Scholar by Diverse Issues in Higher Education.
Dr. Burt began his work with the Wei LAB at the start of the 2019 academic year. For Burt, the LAB was a natural fit for his research interests and values.
“I was excited to join the WeiLAB because for nearly 10 years I have been awe-inspired watching the innovation of the WeiLAB as an outsider,” said Burt. “The portfolio of research grants received, programmatic efforts to broaden participation to educational and workforce pathways, and the development of scholars – many of whom hold underrepresented social identities – make the Wei LAB second-to-none in terms of research centers. Because the work and the practices of the LAB also align with my interests and values in equity and inclusion, make working at the LAB a natural fit.”
Dr. Burt was recently recognized as a 2019 Emerging Scholar by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine and featured on the magazine’s cover. Burt was among 15 scholars recognized as representing “the very best of the U.S. academy.”
“From the moment that he catapulted into the academy, Dr. Brian A. Burt has distinguished himself as an exceptional researcher, teacher, and thinker,” the feature states.
